Artist's Statement:

My concert photography intends to capture the raw emotions and expressions of both the audience and artists. Using my Canon camera, I strive to connect with viewers, making them feel as if they’ve experienced the event or wish they had.

Emotional Maze is a two-room video installation exploring the complexity of my feelings and how they overlap, shift and build. Using light, sound and movement, my videos invite viewers to move through a layered experience of both visible and quiet emotions.

Artist's Statement:

Nature’s Medicine shows the intertwined intersections between nature’s profound healing abilities and the complexities of the human experience of health and wellness, particularly through the lens of botanical and medicinal plants. Through these images, it is my hope that the viewer can see a glimpse of hope of healing their own bodies and can walk away wanting to choose natural healing over prescription healing.

At Mississippi State, senior graphic design major Bryce Yzaguirre found a home to showcase his talents.

The Northport, Alabama, native enrolled in 2021 and began working at The Reflector, the university’s student newspaper. There, his newspaper designs, cartoons, illustrations and graphics have earned numerous awards, including Best Artist/Illustrator at the 2024 Southeast Journalism Conference. He also was picked to illustrate “Tomorrow Charlie,” a children’s book written by ��BT Department of Communication Instructor Josh Foreman’s mother, Elizabeth, and released this past fall.

“I really like to blend abstract forms and exciting, energetic shapes with a realized subject matter that is really identifiable,” he said. “It is important to have mentors who give you inspiration and teach you how to use new tools and faster ways to do something. Mississippi State has a lot of great resources for printing—especially in the art department, where there is a lot of cool technology.”

A self-described “creative kid,” Yzaguirre credits his father for introducing him to art at an early age.

“He was always drawing with me, and we would do drawing battles to see who would have the coolest drawing. Being around that kind of creative side of my dad really fostered my own creativity,” he said.

After graduation, Yzaguirre said he would love to sell his work and have a studio where he can keep creating things.

“I would love for others to enjoy what I want to make. Even if my art is for somebody else, I try to find a way to make it something I enjoy, too,” he said.

Kendrell Daniels first started coming to the campus at Mississippi State as a child, taking advantage of assistive technology resources from the T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability to improve his quality of life. As a teen, he began participating in the center’s Express Yourself! Art Program.

“That’s where I began painting and where I fell in love with art,” he said.

After earning his associate degree in art from East Mississippi Community College, Daniels came back to where his passion for art began.

Now an ��BT senior, the Kemper County native is working on his thesis project, with plans to graduate this May.

Daniels said while he enjoys painting and owns his own business selling his art, (https://kendrelldanielsart.com) he decided to focus on photography for his undergraduate degree at ��BT.

“Photography isn’t something easy with me using a wheelchair and having to find a way to setup and be consistent,” he said. “But being able to tell my story from my perspective through images has been really great for me.”

A lot of Daniels’ work includes self-portraits, and he said his thesis work is centered around telling his story of life as a disabled person and the emotions he goes through on a daily basis.

“I’m very quiet, so people don’t know what I go through personally. I’m glad I can use my photography to communicate that—what it’s like being disabled or a day in my life and what I’ve struggled with or how I feel about some things.”

He’s recently been experimenting with video—including voices and lights—and he said he’s excited to add that to his photography to help tell his story.

A member of the Baptist Student Union on campus, he also enjoys hearing stories from others with different backgrounds. He said BSU’s events focused on international students make an ideal setting for this.

In addition, Daniels has enjoyed making friends in ��BT Athletics and was excited to have an opportunity to create a photography exhibit for the division’s main office.

The soon to be college graduate said being disabled on a large campus does present challenges, but he has been able to rely on the T.K. Martin Center to help him navigate and find resources.

“Being a disabled person in society is all about resources because you have to rely on people to do certain things, which is difficult,” he said.

But, Daniels doesn’t plan to let the extra challenges slow him down any time soon. He recently got his driver’s license and started an internship with Starkville Strong. After graduation, he plans to continue his education and expand his painting business to include photography. He also aspires to start a nonprofit for people with disabilities to create art.
